Niedermeyer token found in Chinese eBay auction

14 June 2010

A few years back we were browsing eBay for Niedermeyer relics to add to the Ntrees project archives.  A Chinese auction with the word Niedermeyer in it popped up in one of our search results.  After scratching our heads for a bit we finally found the English version of the auction.  It turned out to be a trade token being sold by a United States coin collector.  After a bit of research, we discovered the token was from a store owned by a branch of the Niedermeyer clan in Gaylord, Kansas, USA.  The business was opened in 1900 by Ludwig John Niedermeyer who operated it until retirement in 1917.  Its second floor was used for a theatre and school room for the community.  We were delighted to add this intresting find to the collection.
